How can I tell the difference between an antique and something made to look like one?
Today I went into a container full of African masks, shields, chairs, dolls etc and thought everything looked amazing. It all looked really old and smelt musty and old but for all I know they've done that on purpose. The container was in Kampala and my thought is they can probably get old stuff like that pretty easy. Basically I just want to know some key things to look for. The guys in the container just knew the stuff came from Congo and that's it.
I think the only way to know if those things are authentic or not is you check the type of wood they'r made out of. Most of these African antiques are usually made of hardwood. So you can then what type of wood they're made out of. Then one thing to check if they're hardwood is that hardwood is usually heavier than softwood.
